THE Federal Government major review of Defence spending conducted in December 2005 heralds a new era in combat capability for the Australian Defence Force.
However uncertainty remains on the details of large projects such as the Navy’s new destroyers and transport ships, and the replacement aircraft for the RAAF’s
F/A-18s and F-111s.
Of the $52 billion earmarked for Army, Navy and Air Force acquisitions $16 billion is earmarked for 100 American-built
F-35 Joint Strike Fighters.
But although they have access to a large slice of the Defence budget pie RAAF leaders are unsure of the final numbers of F-35s that will be ordered due to blowouts in the price of each aircraft initially costed at $160 million each.
