The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been castigated by MPs over the construction of a £100 million "superhangar" to service the RAF's fighter jets which is now facing possible closure just a year after it opened.

The Commons Defence Committee said it was "incomprehensible" that the MoD decided to go ahead with the Defence Aviation Repair Agency's (Dara) state-of-the-art Red Dragon centre at St Athan, South Wales, in the midst of a logistics review.

The 64,000 square metre facility - since dubbed the White Elephant - was supposed to able to accommodate up to 48 of the RAF's fast jets when it opened in February last year.
