US programmes face paring knife

Final deliberations are under way on the composition of the US Department of Defense's (DoD's) Fiscal Year 2007 budget and a number of crown jewels in the military's modernisation plans are being considered for cuts because of their high price tags.

The US Air Force (USAF) version of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) and the F-22 Raptor air superiority fighter, the US Navy's DD(X) next-generation destroyer and CVN-21 aircraft carrier and the US Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) are all up for potential trimming, delay or outright cancellation, along with a raft of other projects.
