The Greek defense ministry has come under fire over a planned purchase of U.S. 40 F-16C/D fighter aircraft, with the opposition charging that the cost is excessive. ”At a cost which exceeds three billion dollars (2.5 billion euros), the purchase undermines the country’s economy, its growth, and social funding,” the main opposition Pasok party said in a statement received on Oct. 28.
In recent months, the Greek government has been trying to raise funds by selling stock in state-run companies in order to bring Greece’s public deficit into line with European Union requirements.
On Wednesday, the United States Pentagon defense department put the value of the F-16 deal at up to 3.1 billion dollars (2.54 billion euros).continue..
