Japanese supersonic jet test in Australia postponed until Monday

CANBERRA -- Japan's space agency has been forced to postpone a test flight of a supersonic jet prototype for a third day because of windy conditions in the central Australian Outback, a spokesman said Saturday.

The unmanned flight of the SST, or supersonic transport, at the Woomera rocket range in the remote north of South Australia state has been rescheduled to 7 a.m. Monday (2030 GMT Sunday), said Kenichi Saito, a spokesman for Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA.

"The wind is still very strong," Saito said. "It's a little bit cloudy but the wind is the problem."

The test flight has been postponed daily since its original launch date Friday and must be completed because of contractual constraints by Oct. 15.
