Aug. 26 (Bloomberg) -- A U.S. commission considering the overhaul of military installations dealt Pentagon plans two setbacks today by refusing to shut a B-1B bomber base in South Dakota and another Air Force installation in New Mexico. The Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission, in its third day of deliberations in Arlington, Virginia, voted 8-1 to spare Ellsworth Air Force Base, located about seven miles east of Rapid City. About four hours later, the panel worked out a compromise to remove an F-16 fighter wing from Cannon Air Force Base near Clovis, New Mexico, while keeping the facility open.
The Air Force wanted to transfer Ellsworth's 24 B-1B planes to Dyess Air Force Base, near Abilene, Texas, to consolidate the fleet of the supersonic bombers.continue..
