08/26/05 – EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – After being constructed nearly 50 years ago and surviving various test aircraft, Edwards' main runway has approached the end of its functional life.
In an attempt to maintain and uphold runway conditions and the safety of the runway's users, the 95th Air Base Wing Civil Engineer Directorate, in partnership with the 412th Operations Support Squadron, has set out to revamp Edwards' main runway 22/04 by Fiscal 2008.
"The Pavement Condition Index, which begins with a score of 100, dropped from 83 in 1995 to 54 in 1999," said John Stephens, 95th ABW Technical Management Division chief. "The cause of the pavement's rapid deterioration is an Alkali-Silica reaction, which causes increased map cracking and scaling along slab joints and corners in the pavement."
