The military will begin to develop a new light cargo aircraft this year that could go to Air National Guard bases around the country under a deal approved by the House and Senate.
However, it was unclear whether the Air Force or the Army would take the lead on developing the new
Joint Cargo Aircraft or how much money they will be able to spend.
In a series of votes last week, Congress approved a defense authorization bill that allows the Air Force to spend $109.2 million on the planes in fiscal 2007. But Congress also approved a 2007 defense spending bill that gives the Army $72.2 million and the Air Force $15.8 million for the planes.
