WASHINGTON (AP)--Congress voted to fund a fighter jet engine project in Ohio that President George W. Bush wanted to eliminate.

The Senate Friday approved a $448 billion annual budget for the Pentagon, including $340 million for the development of an alternate engine for the Joint Strike Fighter, a next-generation jet the U.S. is working on with the U.K., Australia and other allies. The defense spending bill still has to be signed by the president.

Connecticut-based General Electric Co. (GE) and U.K.-based Rolls Royce Corp. ( RR.LN) have a $2.4 billion contract to create the engine, mostly at a GE Aviation plant near Cincinnati. GE says the contract affects about 800 jobs in Ohio.
