FARNBOROUGH, England (AFX) - A consortium developing an alternative engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet said it is 'cautiously optimistic' about obtaining funding for the next phase of the project.

The Fighter Engine Team, owned 60 pct by General Electric Co of the US and 40 pct by Rolls Royce Group of the UK, said it is encouraged by US Congressional support for its bid for 408 mln usd of US government funds to continue developing the F136 engine.

Three out of four Congressional committees have so far recommended funding the programme in 2007 and the decision of the fourth is awaited later today in the US, according to the GE/Rolls consortium.

Senior vice-president of the consortium, Tom Hartmann, told AFX News at the Farnborough Air Show: 'We are cautiously optimistic that they (the fourth committee) will add funding as well.
