C-5 crash report to be released

A "combination of mechanical and human problems" led to the crash of a C-5 military jet at Dover Air Force Base, Del., on April 3, according to a survivor who was briefed on the accident investigation late Monday.

Paul W. Kath, a retired Navy corpsman who was riding with his wife in the plane’s tail section when it broke up, said from Hawaii that he was asked to keep details from the briefing private until investigators release a report Tuesday in Dover, Del.


“We’re still just very grateful for the durability of the plane,” said Kath, who was briefed by phone. “It says a lot for the aircraft, even with the conditions that it had to come in under, that it was still able to survive and everybody else was able to survive.”

The huge cargo jet was carrying 17 crew members and passengers when it slammed into the ground and broke apart short of a runway minutes after an early-morning takeoff. Several crew members required hospitalization, but there were no fatalities.
