Congress could boost F-22 funding

Two congressional committees have proposed adding money to the Air Force’s fiscal 2007 budget for the F-22A Raptor. The House and Senate Armed Services committees said in early May that they want to give the Air Force an additional $1.4 billion for the program to buy 20 of the stealthy fighter jets.

Air Force officials requested about $2.3 billion for the Raptor, but that money would go toward development and advanced procurement costs — not the actual purchase of any aircraft.


The Air Force’s procurement plan for the Raptors “presents an unacceptable budgeting risk,” House lawmakers said in their proposed changes to the 2007 budget submission. Lawmakers want to give the program additional funds to make its budget more stable.
