Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has warned Pentagon officials that inefficient weapons-buying practices would lead to serious vulnerabilities in national security.

The Pentagon's ability to maintain a proficient acquisition system is "going to be increasingly difficult," Hunter said.

The flagship Department of Defense (DoD) programs, such as the Army’s Future Combat Systems, the Air Force’s F-22 Raptor and Joint Strike Fighter and the Navy’s new generation of aircraft carriers, already suffer from a “severe case of sticker shock,” he added.

Hunter acknowledged the Pentagon’s efforts to change the system but was not optimistic about reducing the price and schedule of major defense modernization programs that are either on the drawing board or already have began.
