The Air Force will ask contractors for concepts for the next generation of tankers within "the next few weeks," the service's top officer said said April 4.
The new tanker is intended to replace the fleet of 40-plus-year-old KC-135 Stratotankers. Likely contractors include Boeing Co. and Airbus.
Speaking to an audience of about 100 people during a breakfast meeting in Washington, D.C., Moseley said tankers are a must for fighters and bombers to maintain a presence over Afghanistan, Iraq and future battlefields.
