Greece wants to order 30 new state-of-the-art combat aircraft this year but it is not yet definite whether they will be European-made Eurofighters, Defense Minister Evangelos Meimarakis said March 16.Greece caused hard feelings among fellow European Union members in December when it ordered 30 U.S.-made F-16/Block 52 planes instead of the Eurofighter.
Meimarakais said in a radio interview a further purchase of 30 planes would complete the country’s current armament program following the controversial $2 billion F-16 deal.
Evaluations would be made during 2006 “and we will perhaps be ready to take decisions this year,” said Meimarakis, declining to confirm whether the final choice would fall on the Eurofighter.
The Eurofighter fighter jet is built by a European consortium made up of Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain.continue..
