Japan, US to test intercepter missile off Hawaii

This week, the Missile Defense Agency will conduct a test-fire of an intercepter missile off Hawaii. The missile, to be launched from a US Aegis destroyer, is a conventional Standard Missile-3 interceptor, with a Japanese nose cone. The test, called Joint Control Test Vehicle-1, will use a simulated target.

Instrumentations in the nose cone include heat sensors, three cameras, telemetry systems, and equipment to measure the shock experienced by the warhead. The components were jointly developed by Mitsubishi and Raytheon. The project, estimated at around 1 to 1.2 billion dollar, is funded by Japan and started in 1999.

A MDA spokesman said the test would be conducted this week but refused to specify the day.continue..
