Germans call for halt to Eurofighter orders

SENIOR politicians from one of the countries partnering Britain in the
Eurofighter project believe that all four members of the scheme should call an immediate halt to aircraft orders in order to save cash.
Hans-Peter Bartels, a defence spokesman with the Social Democrat SPD, one of the three parties in Germany's ruling 'grand' Conservative-Social Democrat coalition, wants his nation to opt for a third fewer of the Eurofighter jets - which cost £60m - than currently planned.
He also called for a scaling down of orders from the British, Spanish and Italian governments, which are involved in the project.
The move would potentially leave the RAF with far fewer than the 250 fighters planned for the UK.
