Italian Army Aviation will start to receive its first NHIndustries NH-90 tactical transport helicopters (TTH) towards the summer of 2006. Reviewing future assets at Shephard’s Heli Power 2005 conference in Rome last week, Brigadier General Enzo Stefanini, the head of Italian Army Aviation, highlighted the initial phased entry into service of the NH-90.
The NH-90 TTL will replace part of the army aviation AB-205, 212 and 412 fleets, with first deliveries of the NH-90 going to the Command Training Centre in Viterbo. These first aircraft will have reduced operational capabilities as part of the avionics and other systems are still in the full certification phase. However these helicopters will be used by pilots in order to conduct training to type. Deliveries of fully equipped NH-90 TTHs will commence in the second half of 2007, then the first tranche will be retrofitted up to the required standard. The first unit is expected to become operational during 2009.
