Faykes: USAF response to England memo spares major programs

The Air Force has responded to an order to trim $8.6 billion from its coffers over the next six years by sending Pentagon officials a plan tailored to avoid slashing funds for -- or terminating -- any major acquisition programs, a senior service official said this week.
“We didn’t want to change [acquisition programs]. We didn’t want to slip them. We didn’t want to cancel anything at this time because those things provide us our core capabilities,” Maj. Gen. Frank Faykes told Inside the Air Force Nov. 9. “At this point, we are doing everything we can to keep those critical programs on track.” Faykes is the service’s deputy assistant secretary for budget matters.
Calling “modernization and recapitalizing the force” a top priority of the service’s new leadership tandem -- Secretary Michael Wynne and Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley -- the two-star said “going into those programs and either curtailing, cutting [or] deferring would run counter” to the duo’s top priorities.
