Lockheed Wins $395 Million Air Force Contract
U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp has won a $395 million contract to support continued production of the new F/A-22 fighter jet, the U.S. Air Force announced on Wednesday.

Work under the new contract, a fixed-fee modification to an earlier contract, must be completed by Dec. 2007, it said.

"This allows us to buy the parts and the material to keep production moving to build the aircraft for the Air Force," said Lockheed spokesman Joe Quimby.

He said the work in question would be on Lot 5, the fifth batch, of the F/A-22, or "Raptor" aircraft -- a $71 billion program developed during the Cold War to replace the F-15 as the top U.S. air superiority fighter.
