Legislation by Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., that would upgrade the nation’s fleet of
B-52 bombers and block a Pentagon plan to dramatically reduce America’s bomber force cleared its final hurdle Friday when the Senate overwhelmingly approved the 2008 Defense Authorization Bill.
Conrad’s amendment blocks a Department of Defense proposal to cut the nation’s B-52 force to 56 aircraft.
The Pentagon’s proposed plan would have greatly impacted the nation’s only two B-52 bomber bases – Minot Air Force Base and Barksdale AFB in Louisiana.
