The ”Bangkok Post” has reported that Thailand’s military government is to purchase six Swedish
Gripen fighter jets, over the next five years, in a deal worth some 450 million US dollars.
Thailand has been under military rule since September 2006, when a bloodless coup overthrew the elected government of Thaksin Shinawatra. The junta has been accused of censorship and human rights violations.
When Shinawatra was still in power he intended to purchase Russian jets - a plan opposed by the Thai air force.
No official confirmation has been made by either the Swedish government or SAAB, who manufacture the aircraft.
