The Air Force is considering picking up the newest
F-35 stealth fighter jets as its next-generation fighters to beef up the country's air strike capabilities, a top Air Force official said yesterday.
"We are mulling taking F-35 fighter jets as our next fighters," Lt. Gen. Kim Eun-ki, deputy chief of the Air Force, said in a parliamentary audit session. "Currently, orders for F-35s are so enormous that it is hard (for us) to purchase them right now. But because next-generation fighters are planned to be deployed after 2010, we expect the purchase will be possible around then."
Kim's remarks came in reply to a question over the purchase by a ruling Uri Party lawmaker who pointed out F-35s are equipped with stealth devices and its price is only 60 percent of the U.S. Boeing Co.'s F-15Ks.
