House votes to fund half of JSF engine project

The tug-of-war over whether the U.S. military will continue to make a back-up engine for its next-generation fighter jet took another turn this week when the House voted to fund the program only halfway.
It is still unclear how much funding will ultimately come out of Congress or what effect the vote will have on the joint production project by GE Aviation and British-based Rolls-Royce, which has U.S. operations near Indianapolis.
At the beginning of the year, President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld wanted to end the Joint Strike Fighter’s alternate engine program, saying Pratt & Whitney had already won the competition to make the engine and a second was too costly.
