Lockheed Takes Steps Now To Ensure Smooth Production of JSF

To help control the cost of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), Lockheed Martin is investing in new tooling equipment and — in a unique move for the company -- looking to establish early long-term relationships with raw materials suppliers, Lockheed officials said June 15.
Lockheed gave JSF program officials authorization on June 13 to buy about $12 million in special tooling that will be needed in future production of the aircraft, said Edward Linhart, company vice president of JSF operations. The company is paying for the tooling.
That equipment would make it possible for the company to produce the aircraft at the rate it says it will be able to, he said.
