Bulk buy would trim $250M from 3-year F-22 costs

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--The U.S. Air Force expects to save about $250 million if Congress allows it to buy Lockheed Martin Corp.'s (LMT) F-22 stealth fighter in a three-year, 60-plane contract, the service's top general told Dow Jones Newswires.
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Michael Moseley said the Air Force needs a multiyear procurement contract to keep costs down. The service is working hard to reassure lawmakers that a bulk purchase makes sense, he said in an interview.
The F-22 Raptor is the Air Force's most expensive fighter - new jets cost about $130 million each. That number doesn't include the plane's hefty development costs, which work out to an additional $200 million or so per plane.
