Despite strong opposition by the United States, Russia announced that it would honor its commitments on supplying Tor-M1 air defense systems to Iran, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
The Tor-M1 is a fifth-generation integrated mobile air defense system designed for operation at medium, low and very low altitudes against fixed/rotary wing aircraft, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicle), guided missiles and other high-precision weapons.
“We discussed supplies of military equipment to Iran, including the Tor M1, in the framework of bilateral cooperation,” Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and First Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Baluyevsky said on Wednesday.
"I'm sure this equipment is not strategic, but it is obvious that it will be delivered in accordance with Russia's international commitments in the nonproliferation sphere and under control by the appropriate bodies. I'm simply sure of it," he added.
