Fate of F-111s to be decided soon

Labor warned of a looming gap in air cover between the planned retirement of F-111 fighter-bombers and delivery of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).

Opposition defence spokesman Robert McClelland said Australia could lose its regional air superiority with the retirement of the F-111s.

The F-111s are due to be retired in 2010 by the Royal Australian Air Force but the F-35 JSFs are not due for delivery until 2012 to 2014.
