Global Hawk operating in Persian Gulf
WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE , Ohio - The first production model of a Global Hawk unmanned surveillance airplane has started flying missions from an undisclosed air base in the Persian Gulf region, the Aeronautical Systems Center announced Thursday.

The high-altitude, long-duration jet arrived at its base on Jan. 12 and made its first combat flight less than 36 hours later, the ASC announcement said. The flight lasted nearly 24 hours.

ASC manages the Global Hawk acquisition program at Wright-Patterson.

The program's airborne success comes in the wake of criticism for cost overruns.
