Nashua, New Hampshire, United States. — BAE Systems is among members of the F-22 Raptor industry team to receive the National Aeronautic Association’s 2006 Robert J. Collier Trophy. The award is America’s most prestigious recognition for aeronautical and space innovation. The Raptor team includes BAE Systems, the U.S. Air Force, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Pratt & Whitney, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and their suppliers. BAE Systems provides the F-22’s electronic warfare suite; communication, navigation, and identification low-observable apertures; multi-spectral countermeasures; and stores management system.
“Our mission has always been the same as the U.S. Air Force’s goal for the F-22 — total air dominance,” said Brian Walters, BAE Systems’ vice president and general manager of F-22 programs. “Our electronic warfare suite protects our warfighters and supports that mission. To be recognized with such a prestigious award is humbling and gratifying.”
The team was recognized for performance, safety, and efficiency dividends the Raptor has provided across its development, testing, and manufacturing phases. The nomination's main focus was the Raptor’s performance in the demanding 2006 joint military exercise called Northern Edge. During the large-scale, force-on-force exercise, Raptor pilots flew 97 percent of their scheduled missions, achieved an 80-to-1 kill ratio against their Red Air “opponents,” scored direct hits with 100 percent of their 1,000-pound GBU-32 Joint Direct Attack Munition air-to-ground weapons, and increased overall situational awareness for their entire team through the F-22’s integrated avionics package.
The National Aeronautic Association is the oldest national aviation organization in the United States. The Collier Trophy was established in 1911 and is awarded each year for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America to improve the performance, efficiency, and safety of air or space vehicles.
