The development of Australia's next generation of warplanes has reached a new milestone, despite continual cost blowouts in the US-led project.

The US government has approved full funding for initial production of two Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft, the Defence Department said in a statement.

The two planes will be conventional take-off and landing variants of the multi-billion-dollar warplane, the world's most advanced.

The money also includes long-lead funding for six conventional take-off and landing variants of the fighter and six short take-off and vertical landing jets.
