Global Hawk heads west

MOSS POINT - A blue tarp was pulled back to encase the first Block 30 Global Hawk unmanned airplane center fuselage built at Northrop Grumman's Moss Point facility, in preparation for its journey to California.

There it will be completed at the Northrop Grumman plant in Palmdale and could serve in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It could also fly border patrol for homeland security or locate survivors after a hurricane.

About 60 employees joined local dignitaries and Northrop Grumman executives Thursday to celebrate the milestone as the first Block 30 fuselage was completed and work begins on the first of 15 Block 40 Global Hawks.

"It's a very important mission that we do," said Vice President Jerry Madigan, who oversees the Global Hawk project.
