Australia: Joint Strike Fighter 'a step closer'

Australia has moved a step closer to acquiring its new combat aircraft, the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).

Defence Minister Brendan Nelson has announced the government has given first-pass approval for Australia's purchase of the JSF, which has been plagued by delays and uncertainties.

Second-pass approval for the JSF is due by 2008.

A spokesman for Dr Nelson said the aircraft which, along with several other countries, Australia was helping to develop, was expected to be delivered in 2012 or 2013.
