U.S. Air Force ready to pursue $13B in tanker funding

Buying new aerial refueling tankers has hit the top of the U.S. Air Force procurement list -- putting the requirement ahead of F-22 Raptor fighter jets.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley told reporters in Washington, D.C., Thursday that a contract could be awarded next summer with deliveries starting in 2011 if Congress will approve $13 billion in funding for the program.

The Air Force has a fleet of 579 tankers, most of them more than 40 years old, that are used to refuel fighters, bombers and cargo aircraft for various missions, including the war in Iraq.
