Air Force increases tanker order

BATH, England -- The stakes have gone up considerably in the competition to supply the U.S. Air Force with air-refueling tankers.

Instead of an initial buy of 100 tankers, the Air Force wants 189, which would mean considerably more work, and probably many more jobs, for The Boeing Co.'s Everett plant should the company win the competition.

The Air Force recently informed competitors that it wanted more tankers than had been expected initially, although the service has not said anything publicly.
