CENTAF releases airpower summary for June 29

SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials announced the airpower summary for June 29.

In Afghanistan June 28, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and B-1 Lancers and Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s provided close-air support for a coalition forces convoy taking small-arms fire from Taliban extremists near Deh Rawood. A-10s expended guided bomb unit-12s. A B-1 expended a GBU-38 on the extremists' location, ending the engagement.

A-10s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Gereshk, and a B-1 provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact near Asadabad.

Additionally, eight U.S. and French air force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 26 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, Navy F-18C Hornets provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mahmudiyah.

Additionally, 14 Air Force, Navy, Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Navy fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 56 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

On June 27, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew two medical evacuation missions in support of OEF. Four local national patients with injuries requiring urgent care were evacuated as a result of these missions.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 150 airlift sorties, delivered 350 tons of cargo and transported 1,680 passengers. This included more than 18,000 pounds of humanitarian civil assistance in central Afghanistan, which contained food, water, school and teaching supplies.

Coalition C-130 crews from Canada and Japan flew in support of either OIF or OEF.

On June 27, U.S., French and Royal Air Force tankers flew 41 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.6 million pounds of fuel.
