North Dakota and Louisiana senators are moving forward with efforts to stop the retirement of B-52 bombers and keep all of the planes flying at their respective bases.
"We're about to have a meeting the North Dakota and Louisiana delegation on the B-52s," said Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., prior to the meeting late Tuesday afternoon.

He said the meeting would further their efforts to secure the funding in the appropriations bill that will be considered probably in May "and we're reaching out to colleagues and making the case for the B-52s."

Conrad, Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and Sens. Mary Landrieu, D-La., and David Vitter, R-La., and their staffs participated in the meeting.

In February, the Defense Department in its Quadrennial Defense Review, called for cutting the number of B-52 bombers in the nation's fleet from 93 plus one on loan to NASA down to 56 aircraft by fiscal year 2008. Such a cut would greatly impact Minot Air Force Base and Barksdale AFB in Louisiana both homes to B-52 bombers.
