HONOLULU, March 9 (UPI) -- The United States and Japan carried out a successful launch of an SM-3 missile as part of the development of a sea-based ballistic missile defense system.

The Missile Defense Agency said Wednesday's launch took place off the coast of Hawaii and was meant to gauge the effectiveness of a Japanese-designed "clamshell" nosecone.

The modified nosecone opens easier, enabling a quicker deployment of the kinetic warhead that intercepts the incoming missile.

The test, dubbed Joint Control Test Vehilce-1, involved a simulated target entering into the control system of the cruiser USS Lake Erie, which then launched the SM-3 (Standard Missile 3).continue..
