Capt. John Aquilino, outgoing commander of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 banks an F/A-18E Super Hornet strike fighter over the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) as he leaves incoming commander Capt. Alton Ross, to lead a formation of aircraft during a CVW 2 aerial change of command ceremony. Lincoln and CVW 2 are returning from a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

An F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, numbered AA-1, taxis past the control tower on Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., Oct. 1. It marked the first time the aircraft arrived here. The F-35 will perform a series of tests, including airstart and noise testing. The aircraft flew in from Naval Air Station Fort Worth, Texas.

Pilots and maintainers tend to the first operationally-flown transatlantic Global Hawk - Click to Expand
SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Pilots and maintainers with the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing tend to the first operationally-flown transatlantic Global Hawk here Sept. 21. It was also the first joint-launch in the history of the aircraft. The unmanned aircraft was only on the ground for about five hours after its historic flight from Pax River, Md., Sept. 20 before being turned around and sent into the Area of Operations. The operational flight also marked the first time two Global Hawks were being flown simultaneously in neighboring theaters in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.

Edwards F-22 Raptor performs aerial refueling using synthetic fuel (2) - Click to Expand
An Edwards F-22 Raptor receives synthetic fuel from a KC-135 Stratotanker during an aerial refueling test using an alternative jet engine fuel Aug. 28. Organizations involved in this endeavor include the 411th Flight Test Squadron, Air Force Research Laboratory, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Pratt and Whitney, and Honeywell. The test was done as part of the Secretary of the Air Force’s initiative to certify the entire fleet on synthetic fuel, an effort to lessen foreign dependence on oil.

J-UCAS Program Image Gallery

In late 2003, DARPA formed the J-UCAS office, merging the Air Force X-45A UCAV and the Navy X-47A UCAV-N unmanned combat air vehicle programs.
In early 2006 the J-UCAS program was cancelled. The Navy's X-47 program office was moved to the Patuxent Naval Air Station, while the Army's X-45 program was terminated. Boeing is considering modifying it's X-45, so it can compete with the X-47 in the Navy's UAV program.
